Sacrifice For Those In Need: ICNYU Dhul Hijjah Udhiyah/Qurbani For Sudan
The Islamic Center at NYU is partnering with Islamic Relief USA to bring food relief to our brothers and sisters in Sudan. - http://launchgood.com/ICNYU4Sudan
Once a year, on Eid-ul-adha, Muslims around the world pay to feed one another through their Qurbani/Udhiya. This year, we are asking you to donate your Qurbani/Udhiya to the people of Sudan, the cost of which is $100 and will feed up to 10 families. If you aren't able to give that much, please consider giving whatever you can. People who receive the meat will include widows, orphans, the destitute, the elderly, people with disabilities, and so many more individuals that the world has forgotten.

SUNNI FIQH of EidulAdha
A copy of the Eid Takbeers can be accessed here. Please download a copy to recite before the prayers. It can be prayed anytime after sunrise until noon and must be done so in the congregation. It is recommended to pray it about an hour and a half after sunrise.
Here's a short tutorial on how to pray the Eid prayer
- The first cycle: there is the opening takbir, then the prayer leaders says “Allahu Akbar” [God is the greatest] six more times, and then recites the opening chapter from the Qur’an followed by a short reading from another chapter of the Qur’an.
- After rising for the second cycle: one says “Allahu Akbar” to arise and stands for the second cycle of prayer then states Allahu Akbar 5 more times before reading the opening chapter from the Qur’an.
Recommended acts:
- To keep night vigil the night before the ‘Eid prayer*.
- To take a ritual bath prior to the prayer.
- To apply perfume [for men only].
- To wear one’s best clothing.
- To eat something before the ‘Eid prayer. It is best to eat a few dates and if proven difficult, then drinking some water as this is the sunnah of the Prophet.
- Engage in takbir with your families. If you’re solo, then know that you are engaging in takbir with the angels!
- "Slaughtering an animal after the Eid prayer is a revival of the sunna of two Prophets: ibrahim and Muhammad (AS)."
- May Allah bless you and give you the best ‘Eid ever!

Method of Performing Eid Prayer
- The Eid al-Adha prayer is recommended and it can be performed in congregation or on one’s own and must be performed between sunrise and the time of Dhuhr prayers.
- If the Eid prayer is performed in congregation (as a family, for instance), it should be followed by two sermons by the Imam of the prayer.
- The prayer consists of 2 rakaats, after recitation of Sura al-Fatiha, any other Sura. There is a recommendation that prior to entering into ruku, we perform 5 qunoot in first rakat and 4 qunoot in the second rakat.
(Another opinion suggests 4 in the first and 3 in the second)
Recommended acts:
- Spend the night of before Eid in worship and seeking forgiveness. Hadiths state that it is amongst the most important nights of worship throughout the year.
- Beginning at the time of Maghrib on the eve of Eid, be engaged in Dhikr of God, which should remain throughout Eid day.
- To take a ritual bath [ghusl] prior to the prayer, apply perfume and wear clean clothing.
- Highly encouraged to recite Dua #48 of Imam Zain al-Abideen in Sahifa Sajjadiya.
- Recommended rituals for the day of Eid include recitation of Dua al-Nudba and Ziyarat of the Prophet and his family.
- Be thankful to God for granting us the blessings of this day, and be in repentance for any sins that may not have been forgiven during the day of Arafah.
- May it be a blessed day for your and your families, insh’Allah!
